Well done to our Year 8 boys who travelled to Belfast on Friday to take part in the first ever Ulster Colleges Year 8 Blitz. With school’s from all over Ulster in attendance, it was a tough assignment for Mr Forker’s Fledglings. They boys however were up for the task and played some great football throughout the day. The boys were defeated in their opening game against a strong OLASP side but bounced back to win the remaining games in the group stages against St. Louis Ballymena, St Columb’s Derry and St Patrick’s Keady. With 3 sections the boys got a bye to the shield final against la salle of Belfast who won their semi final convincingly.
The final was a nip and tuck and despite playing with the breeze the boys went in 2 points down. La salle scored a goal from the throw up at the start of the second half and it looked like the HTC were dead and buried. It was Thomas Mackle Tiernan Mackle and Patrick Quinn who led the charge and Cookstown closed the gap to a single point. With seconds on the clock Oran Mulgrew produced a moment of sheer class and waltzed thorough the la salle defence to blast the ball to the roof of the net. The final whistle was followed by an invasion of the field by the HTC sub bench and the boys were rightly delighted with the result.
Everyone on the team played their part with noteworthy performances throughout the day from Dylan Bloomer, Jamie Bloomer, and James Monaghan. Captain Ben McNally lifted the cup for HTC. Well done lads!
